Medical Training at St George’s Hospital Medical School in London, where I did an Intercalated BSc that included immunology.
I specialise in general paediatric neurology with specific interest in epilepsy, headaches and migraine, movement disorders including tics and Tourette syndrome, fits, faints and funny turns, weakness and unexplained intermittent symptoms.
Trained in various paediatric sub-specialities on London University Hospital rotations that included District General Hospital periods in Kent.
Sent 3 years studying cerebral haemodynamics in newborn infants at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School in London, and obtained an research MD degree from the University of London.
Completed my training as a paediatric neurologist in Southampton, and in 2000 was appointed as a Consultant in Bristol.
Have a long term interest in epilepsy and epilepsy surgery and undertook a sabbatical period at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.
Have a particular interest in cerebral palsy and undertake medico-legal work in this area.
I am the medical lead for the Bristol Children’s Epilepsy Surgery Programme, which became one of the four nationally designated epilepsy surgery units in November 2012. The aim of such surgery is to control seizures where they remain poorly controlled on medication. This requires a large multidisciplinary team able to perform and interpret a large number of complex, often prolonged and invasive investigations.
Enjoy teaching, training, and examining. I have been post-graduate tutor for Bristol Children’s Hospital, host the Postgraduate Clinical MRCPCH Examination, and regularly teach on national epilepsy training courses.
I am the Secretary of my professional body the British Paediatric Neurology Association (BPNA), and after it recently gained Charitable Status become a Trustee.
As full time clinician am involved in multi-centre commercial and non-commercial research studies, and have worked with various university departments leading to identification of new and novel genetic causes of neurological conditions.
